This article is written especially for younger readers who may experience politics mostly through personalities, slogans, protests, and policy fights. Beneath those surface displays is a deeper philosophical divide over human dignity, human flourishing, government, responsibility, and self-reliance.
Democrats and Republicans both claim to care about human dignity and the essentials of a decent life. But they differ sharply in how they believe those conditions are best achieved. Democrats tend to emphasize dignity through public guarantees that protect people from material insecurity. Republicans tend to emphasize dignity through agency, responsibility, work, family, community, opportunity, and the ability to become self-supporting — along with a safety net for those in genuine need.
The article argues that the real divide is not compassion versus indifference. A humane society should help people in crisis. But the design of that help matters. The strongest safety net should not merely deliver benefits; it should help people move from crisis to stability, from stability to capability, and from capability to independence.
At its best, the safety net should be a bridge, not a destination.
The Strategic Risk of AI: The Quiet Erosion of Apprenticeship and Organizational Judgment
AI may prove to be far more dangerous as a management temptation than as a labor-saving tool. In the rush to replace junior work, many firms are not simply cutting costs—they are dismantling the apprenticeship path through which judgment, expertise, and future leadership are built. The real strategic risk is not that AI changes work; every major productivity tool has done that. It is that management may use AI to erode apprenticeship, weaken institutional judgment, and ultimately undermine the core value of the company.
Can Artificial Intelligence solve the critical thinking gap?
The question is whether Artificial Intelligence can address the problem of teaching critical thinking. Since we now have two generations of teachers who have never learned these skills, very few teachers remain—except possibly in the best of our schools—who can pass this marvelous invention along to future generations.
